A Dairy Story
Synopsis
Every day, thousands of dairy calves are separated from their mothers at birth. One Scottish farm risks everything to prove there's another way.
This documentary feature follows Wilma and David Finlay as they challenge dairy farming's most controversial practice: separating calves from their mothers at birth. Their determination to reinvent dairy farming, by putting nature and animal welfare first, has meant they've had to overcome financial catastrophe and industry criticism. When Wilma receives a terminal cancer diagnosis, their mission takes on new urgency.
Filmed over two years, and following calves from birth to weaning, the dairy herd's profound capacity for maternal care is shown amid the harsh beauty of the Scottish landscape.
This thought-provoking micro-budget documentary shows how changing a farming system changes everything; from the lives of the animals to the wellbeing of the farmers, and perhaps even the future of dairy farming itself.
