Superstition
Synopsis
Julie (Sienna Guillory) is the young English nanny hired by wealthy Italian couple Mirella and Alessandro Cenci (Alice Krige, Derek de Lint) to take care of their baby son Claudio. Julie is soon accused of attempting to seduce Alessandro, however, and when baby Claudio dies in a mysterious fire at the family home, the finger points at the young outsider.
As the witch-hunt intensifies, Julie's only hope lies in the hands of defence lawyer Gabrieli (Mark Strong). Although still grieving the recent loss of his wife, Gabrieli is persuaded to take on Julie's case by his friend and fellow lawyer Isabella Flores (Frances Barber).
Julie's guilt hangs in the balance, but when further unexplained fires begin to blaze, the young nanny's involvement seems irrefutable and she is jailed for suspected arson. Together with a former psychiatrist Mother Frances Matteo (Charlotte Rampling) and Dr. Roberto Fallaci (David Schofield), an expert in the supernatural, Gabrieli fights to prove the girl's innocence. In a final unveiling of shattering events from Julie's past, the unnerving truth is revealed.
